Our story
The Code Heroes story begins in Brisbane with our founder and CEO, Brendt Sheen. When the Apple App Store was launched in 2008 marking the birth of an exciting new industry, Brendt knew right away he wanted to learn all he could about the world of mobile.
Having dreamed of carrying a computer in his pocket since he was a kid, Brendt was captivated by this tech evolution and the endless opportunities this new world provided, and he quickly built on his web development experience to become a mobile software expert.
The mobile industry was beckoning, and Brendt was ready to take heed. Code Heroes was launched in 2011 with a focus on building native mobile applications for iOS (Objective-C) and Android (Java).
At the time - not unlike now - clients were keen to target both major mobile platforms, which presented a problem as it doubled the cost and timeframe.
However, new tech was on the horizon, and in 2015 the Code Heroes team moved to Xamarin (C#), and our clients benefited from an increase in value production.
The industry grew and evolved further and soon there was a new player from Google on the scene which was getting a lot of attention.
We started to evaluate Flutter and we had confidence that this new framework would prove to be not only a long-term benefit to our clients but also to our company.
We started our Flutter journey in January 2018.
Why is this tech best? The Flutter engine renders the User Interface (UI) itself via the GPU, resulting in super smooth and high frame rate transitions. Xamarin, on the other hand, is bound to the native UI components APIs on both iOS and Android; this forces the Xamarin framework to support only the lowest common denominator (LCD) between iOS and Android UI elements. A feature that called for anything above LCD resulted in platform-specific code or duplication of effort.
With Flutter in our tool belt, again, our clients observed an increase in value production. Flutter enabled us to deliver world-class, beautiful, natively compiled, multi-platform applications from a single codebase. And let me tell you - deploying apps to mobile, desktop and web from a single codebase is a really big deal!
